Abstract

The novel Speak centers on Melinda Sordino, a high school student who, after undergoing an experience of sexual abuse perpetrated by another student from the same school, experiences trauma that isolates her from the social circle to which she belonged prior to said event. Anderson presents Melinda's life in the aftermath of the abuse, chronicling how a large part of the student community rejects her and how Melinda's behavior has altered, as she ceases to be a girl with hopes and motivations. The reader accesses the thoughts and observes all events from the protagonist's point of view, allowing for the reflection of her feelings and opinions regarding the adults surrounding her, such as teachers and her parents.
