Abstract

Critical Thinking (CT) is one of the fundamental skills for the 21st century. Its development is one of the primary goals to be achieved at all educational levels worldwide. However, there are few studies on the obstacles and challenges encountered during the teaching-learning processes. This article aims to explore the perceptions of students and faculty in the psychology bachelor’s degree program regarding the teaching-learning process of CT at a public university, using a mixed-methods approach with a parallel-convergent design. The main findings suggest a discrepancy between students’ and faculty members’ perceptions of CT teaching-learning process. In conclusion, the absence of a shared conceptual framework, non-explicit assessment, traditional teaching practices, and limited teacher training are identified as obstacles that require a rethinking of institutional strategies to strengthen CT. It is recommended to promote teacher training in active teaching methodologies, develop culturally appropriate assessment tools, and reduce class sizes to foster more effective and reflective teaching of CT.
